About the Book:
The 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s posting of the Ninety-Five Theses in 1517 is closely approaching (2017). The celebration of this event will remind Christians of the many changes that caused a period of history to be dubbed the Reformation era.
Those who take their Christian faith seriously are now contemplating a New Reformation. Those who think reform is urgent wish to return to the original message of Jesus, back to the real Word of God.
If the question is asked today, “What is the word of God?” many Christians will answer, “The Bible is the Word of God.” Innumerable Christians will probably go on to insist that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God. However, John 1:1-18 states that Jesus, himself, is The Word of God.
There is a strong attempt today in conservative Christianity to displace Jesus as the Word of God in an effort to downplay the power of the Holy Spirit and to exercise more control over believers.
Shortly before his death Jesus promised the disciples that he would send the Holy Spirit, the Advocate, to teach them and to remind them of what Jesus had taught them (John 14: 26). The Spirit in Christ’s character appeared dramatically at Pentecost. It re-educated Paul during his three years in the desert. It informed and led the early Church. The Church in the first centuries had no written word to which to refer but had to seek the basic source, the unwavering Truth itself which was within the form of the Spirit.
Gradually the “word” of the Church took over as the authority in all things religious. After the first reformation, the “word” of the Bible, with whatever interpretation a particular teacher or denomination might give, became “the word of God”. Often the tenets of faith were based on practices, rituals and human interpretation of scripture and not based on the mysterious power of the Spirit or the teachings of Christ.
This short book focuses on how Christians can move toward a New Reformation through Jesus, the Word, the Living Spirit. Christianity is beset from within as well as from the outside. We need to go back to the Word and experience a New Reformation.
